My statement

Each of the eleven images below show the variety and depth to my work. I chose these works because I wanted to show how my interest for textiles can expand through many genres of art. My favorite work shown is the chance drawing and collage as it allowed me to experiment with just black and white but create various outcomes without the idea of focusing on colour. Choosing to relate the work back to fashion garments meant i was able to play around with a variety of mark making and focus more on pattern. The idea of mark making is evident in my potato drawing also as by using other methods than shading allows the image to take on a different form. With each of these works submitted I wanted to reflect my style and my approach within various briefs.
I have always been interested in art forms which shows pattern, colour and a textures. I was very keen when studying Ceramics to GCSE level as it allowed me to understand these three different areas but in a different context to what I am used to in material forms. These three ideas were also evident with my child hood obsession with wanting to become a fashion designer as it has created an awareness for these three aspects of art. Textiles for me reinstates these three ideas but with understanding of the context. My interest in the course is to not only further my knowledge of the subject of Textile design but to immerse myself more in different aspects of the course. What most excites me about the programme is being able to combine my understanding and drive for Textiles with fashion to create various outcomes and designs. This will be evident with working to live industry briefs.

Year Book final outcome

For creative sketchbook the aim was to create a yearbook from one year which questioned what a book is. My final outcome is based on the year 1980. The picture shows the back of the skirt which is based on a 1980 design with my interpretation on Vivienne Westwood's pirate collection pattern. The skirt is made from Calico. I have also used pac man as decoration as it was created in 1980 and painted on with acrylic paint. To resemble a book i used image maker to paste headlines onto the skirt. On the front of the skirt is a pocket which holds a home made book with the process of how the book is made in it, which is also to resemble the idea of the book.

Scale and Space

For the latest textiles project the aim was to focus on the composition of work with the scale and space being key aspects to the work. The original designs were using black and white media and making various garments, where you drew sections from the mannequins. Using sections of the mark making, they were turned into screen prints working with three colours to create various compositions. These three screen prints were three of my final prints.

Juxtaposition

Screen print final outcomes from the idea of Single and Multiples. The figure taken from a campaign from Yohji Yamamoto's work and repeated numerous times and varying scales to show the connection between singular and multiples. To develop the ideas further the prints were aimed towards fashion garments.

Dada Inspired print

The final Print from the Collagraph and Lino print window mount onto card.

Dada Inspired Print Collage

A worksheet made up of pictures, drawings and information with the original material for the Lino and Collagraph combined prints. The head was taken from one of my photographs of an alternative face which was a dove cot, whilst the collagraph body was taken from a photograph of the Queen as it was meant to resemble an iconic figure. The worksheet is to show on the left the process and techniques.

Summer in The City

A photographic collage reflecting the summer of 2011. A series of photographs which document my work from the initial college through to the end result. The starting collage was a mix group of newspaper articles reflecting the summer of 2011, then turned into a sheet of Acetate to take to the dark room. The bottom two prints show that on the left is a test image which shows the varying times of exposure to create the best outcome for my end result. On the bottom right my final outcome in diagonal contrast to my original collage.

Potato Drawing

A still life drawing of a series of potatoes drawn in black Biro. To create the marks I used my initials of HKG which varies in size, colour and width from each other dependent on the part of the potato and its shading.

Typographic Sandwich 2

Continuing with the theme of typography but relating the work to a design which could be printed on a garment whilst creating a interesting pattern.

Typographic Sandwich

After creating a sandwich filling, playing around with the appearance of typography in relation to its message by using various hand crafted techniques.

Chance Collage and Drawings Outcome

Continuing the previous ideas of the mixed media black and white collages. For my outcome I wanted to continue to create ideas for garments. I used three different models in three different situations to create a variety and greater outcome of ideas. Each of the three figures showcase various mark making skills within their outfits.

Chance Drawing and Collage

Under the theme of chance, a college of experimentation with black and white media relating to fashion.
